Flash Flood

In October, my hosts were away for a few days and I was "managing" the Guest House when the river rose suddenly and swept over the dike into our back yard.
The Guest House became an island in no time; the current was strong enough to carry a large bird cage off its foundations and across the road.
We were up on stilts, but as the water kept rising, we emptied lower shelves, just in case.

As it turned out, God let the waters come just up to the floor, but no higher.
One house, also on stilts, got 20 inches of water inside. But we were grateful that most of the damage was limited to washing machines that floated away.
Some of our neighbors lost crops and important household items.

The layer of mud left as the water receded was slippery, foul-smelling, and chocolate-colored. It covered everything!
